You can't determine which way it breaks.

That said, there is a higher probablility of a continuation pattern. Meaning if the previous move is an uptrend, and the price is above MAs and VWAP, then there is a higher probability of a breakout to the upside. And vice-versa.

Technically analysis is all about probability. It is not really a predictive tool. Nothing is. I use it most effectively as a reactive tool.
