My Most Shitty Investments Challenge: Genius plan went tits up

A shitty investment could come in different forms really; some of them are quite obvious and really smack you in the face, like the time you thought it was a nice idea to spend xxx amount to buy sand and then sell it on a beach. My shitty investment wasn't anything like that, actually, it was a well thought out plan that went tits up due to unexpected circumstances.

Sometime in 2018, fresh after quitting my blood sucking marketing job, I and my brother invested time and money into setting up a business centre inside Niger Delta University Campus, in Bayelsa State. On the surface of it, it looked like a good idea because it had all the hallmarks for success.

There were two young and vibrant investors, lots of energy, ideas and plenty drive to make it succeed. If only life worked based on our feelings, I'd have been swimming in money but instead, we ended up with an elaborate clusterfuck that I haven't even finished unfucking till today.

A business centre is basically a place where people go to make photocopies, do internet registration, course registerations, and generally anything that has to do with computers. I also have some experience with laptop repairs, so I chipped that in and included sales of accessories like earphones, screen protectors and all that shit. Honestly, it was such a sweet operation that lacked one key ingredient, marketing.

I spent so much time and money trying to make the place run but I couldn't for the life of me bring customers over. It was so bad that people didn't even know there was a business there, despite having our huge banner right in their faces. I did all I could for the business but the shitty situation, coupled with an internal strike meant that the business was unconditionally closed and the straw that broke the Camel's back was leaving Bayelsa to Kaduna to start my Masters.
