I really like the idea of attending Hive fest and I actually would have loved to attend it physically but that won't be possible this year.

The Coronavirus is still kicking the world in the nuts and so physical meetup will be too complicated.

Last year we hosted a virtual meetup and this year, it's going to be the same. I wasn't able to attend because I registered late but this year I registered early enough and will attend.

Thoughts about VR glasses

The idea of buying VR glasses only popped into my head last year because of Hivefest. Now, we're here again and the idea is popping up...again.

I was hoping that I'd buy the VR glasses for PlayStation but unfortunately, they aren't compatible with Altspace.

This incompatibility creates a big problem for me because if you truly want to experience Hivefest, you just have to wear VR goggles. It will give you a proper immersive experience and all that.

I talked to my wife about it and we checked Jumia marketplace in Nigeria and found the Oculus VR glasses for around 260k Naira or roughly ($500) for the 64GB model.

We both felt like that was a little bit too much money to be spent on a device that we'll use for only two days in the year. However, I looked it up and saw a bunch of cool games in Oculus that could be really fun.

Sadly though, buying the Oculus now is a little bit of a vanity purchase because the country is not safe and we have to focus on getting out before things get worse.

$500 is a lot of money to spend on VR glasses, so that means getting Oculus VR is completely ruled out. However, I'll still like to experience Hivefest properly, rather than just watch through my computer screen.

What else could be done?

The main question on my mind is that are there other cheaper and effective VR options that I could use to attend Hivefest?

Right now, the maximum we can spend on the VR glasses is $250, or about half the price of the Oculus Quest 2 VR we saw on Jumia. So can you recommend any alternative that is within our price range and is also compatible with Altspace?

I'm really excited about meeting all the awesome people in the community, so attending is really important to me. I'd love to build new connections, make new friends, and also strengthen the bonds I already have now through interaction with all the good people of Hive.

I really need to get everything sorted out early enough and figure out the necessities to attend.

If you've not registered for Hivefest, check out this post by @roelandp that explains what you have to do.
