This has been a very hot topic on Nigerian Twitter for some time now. I always read and ignore but, something gave me a pause this morning. Take a look:

“Nigerian architects are very ungrateful , I gave you a job that comes with a lot of exposure and you’re refusing because you want more money ! You just lost a client”

Trust me when I say that the replies are very hot. A few people got burned in the process, including the poster himself. I'm sure it'd be awhile before he says something like that again.

But I'm bringing it you here. Tell me. Which is it for you?

Money or Exposure?

Let's look at the both of them.

*Exposure is a good thing. In fact, it is a very beautiful thing. It's one of the things one should aim for in order to reach the peak of their career. It's sweet when you're at that level. The confidence too. One of the advices given to young people and fresh graduates is to look for exposure, because when you get that, the money will begin to flow in.

(Permit me to tell you that they lied to you. This is only my opinion tho 😂😉) **

Money* on the other hand is something we cannot do without. Try as you may, it doesn't matter the kind of exposure you have. If it isn't paying, you're still where you are. Yes, you have the experience but it doesn't pay bills. And let's face it, clients who can't pay you well because they're exposing you will eventually link you to fellow clients who also do not pay well. It's a kind of manipulation, a cycle that helps them remain on top. They use your skills to their own advantage. In the end, you gain nothing out of it.

This isn't to say there aren't good opportunities out there. There are places that elevate you and your career to the point you never imagined you'd ever find yourself. And yes, people make that happen. The difference is that the genuine ones do not extort you of your skills in the process. And yes, they pay you well while at it.

Like I said, this is only my opinion and it's very unpopular. Let's hear what you have to say.
