What Led Me To The Blockchain...

A question a lot of people ask anyone who is interested in blockchain technology is what led them their in the first place. It's that very questions that would also suggest that it remains prevalent still today that majority of the world is as naive to bitcoin and all other blockchains currently out there. Unless out of pure curiosity, a person asking asking this question would assume a strong indication that they do not understand the underlying value of bitcoin the blockchain itself and are just as naive as I was back before I listed to a podcast by Charlie Shrem that changed my life!

I discovered blockchain about 3 1/2 years ago when I used to have 3 hour daily commutes to work. During these commutes I would listen to a lot of podcasts, and considering I was commuting a total of 3 hours I often times struggled to find new interesting podcasts.

One of the main Podcasts I'd listen to then was Planet Money and on one of my commutes to work they aired an episode with Charlie Shrem. It was during this interview with Charlie that I finally understood blockchain and just because it was digital didn't mean it could be hacked, like I had assumed all the way up until that point. I mean, prior to listening to the Podcast I certainly had heard of bitcoin, I even played a lot of online poker and most sites even offered bitcoin. So I did have an early chance to snag bitcoin under $100 that I never took!

Anyway, in the Podcast Charlie talked only about his experience in prison from whatever he had done to get him there, which I didn't know or care about at the time. Apparently while Charlie was in prison, there was issue with the prison currency being inflated because the guards would confiscate the currency the inmates would use as means of exchange for trading other things like ciggs and other contraband. In Charlies case, the prison currency the inmates were using was a pack of fish (i.e. like a pack of Sardines).

The way Charlie described the issue was that the prison guards put a risk to their economy market because when they confiscate the fish packets, they rapidly artificially inflate the price of the remaining fish. For every inmate other than Charlie up until he arrived, there was nothing they could do and it was a system they lived.

Charlie's explanation of how he created a working manual blockchain system is what helped me see the connection to how computers can run the same blockchain i.e. distributed ledger. That's ultimately the point I realized that bitcoin could not be hacked and felt confident enough to actually buy my first bitcoin, because up until that time I was probably just as ignorant to the blockchain as everyone still obviously seems to still be today.

If you wanted me to get in the full details of how Charlie made a manual working version of the blockchain when he was at prison then you'll have to listen to the podcast yourself.

Please comment and share how you learned about blockcahin and when you bought your first to bitcoin!
