The Guy on the Buffalo
We are back to another episode of small acquisitions in my precious metal stash. To reiterate, the outbreak made it difficult for retail investors to get metals. As such, I had to branch away from the boring one ounce bars I'd get each month. So far, so good. I like some of the designs I have came across that were available. Today, I'm going to show you this 5-oz silver ingot I got off of APMEX.
Before that, I will give a brief historical background.
The 1901 $10 Bison Note
This was an actual legal tender note back in the early 1900s. In case you couldn't tell, there is a buffalo in the middle. Lewis and Clark, the explorers of the pioneer days also appear on on the note. The back of the note features Columbia, who is the personification of USA. Most of you know of Uncle Sam, but he represents more of the government than the country made up of its people.
The note itself is a collector's item. If you were to try to buy it, it would cost you about $1000 to acquire this antique note.
Anyways, the silver piece attempts to capture that image. Well, at least part of it.
A part of me felt disappointed as the mint only captured the buffalo, but none of Lewis and Clark. The back is plain as it could get. It looks like wafer cookie. Last of all, why was it chosen to be on a 5-oz bar? Would it make more sense to do this on a 10-oz silver bar instead?
For your information, though, there exist the 10-oz (and 1-oz) version of it.
I'll be frank, the piece would most likely cost more than $100 if the silversmith manages to pull off all the details. It is around $5 over spot, but the current market charges a ridiculous premium due to short supply. At the end of the day, five ounces of silver is five ounces of silver.
