As some of you know, in my country we are in a period of economic instability, this “period” has been going on for several years and an early solution does not appear on the horizon. On the contrary, I believe that we are condemned to continue like this for quite some time.

Consequently, Argentines have become experts in looking for alternatives to preserve the value of savings (for those who have them) or simply that of salary, so that what is charged at the beginning of the month can pay until the next without losing against inflation that is in the order of 3-4% per month at the moment. I know that for many this is something totally unknown and unimaginable, but it is the reality that we live in and we are not the only ones.

To make matters worse, there is a trap or restriction on the acquisition of dollars, our preferred store of value. The common citizen can buy up to 200 dollars a month and with a significant surcharge on the official quotation, which brings it very close to the value of the informal market, known colloquially in our country as "blue."

Consequently, local cryptocurrency exchanges have long been offering some of the existing stablecoins on the market, namely USDT (Tether), DAI (MakerDAO), USDC (Coinbase) and BUSD (Binance), just to name those with the largest market capitalization. In particular, the most popular in these distant lands are USDT and DAI.

All these currencies are called stable since their price is always around the same value of 1 dollar and for this, they claim to have equivalent reserves.

DAI claims to have excess reserves to guarantee the 1 to 1, there is talk of more than 3 dollars for each DAI. I do not know if this is real and how these reserves are distributed. I have found a lot about how to buy, how to invest, how to connect a wallet. Little about how its backing is composed. This is not to say that they hide it, just that it is not visible enough to ordinary people like me.

In the case of Tether, I learned more about its true portfolio composition and the truth is that it does not seem to be totally consistent with absolute convertibility. According to the experts, there are several accounting items in which the guarantee reserve is divided, in the nominated "cash and equivalents", the reality is that cash is scarce, only 4%, the rest is divided into loans of short-term (the largest proportion), fiduciary deposits and US treasury bonds. The questions that immediately come to mind are what if there were problems with loans, deposits or bonds? How would the 1-to-1 support work in those cases? I don't have a reassuring answer for them.

I have some USDT, not too many. Until a couple of days ago, when I read some articles referring to this that I am telling, I was a happy ignorant. Now that joy has turned into some concern, although I will continue to trust that the balance exists and that my investment portfolio is diversified, although from now on I will give stablecoins a couple of risk points.

Tengo algunos USDT, no demasiados.
