In recent times I have heard several economists in my country comment on cryptocurrencies, fundamentally after our president spoke about them, denoting an astonishing lack of information. Of course, he does not have to know about them, not even economics since he is a lawyer, but it is difficult to understand that the long and expensive list of his advisers does not instruct him in the basic concepts of their mechanics.

But I already went around the bush a bit, going back to the economists, all or at least the vast majority of them are against cryptocurrencies, the fundamental reason is volatility, although there are others among which we can mention scams, lack of a regulatory framework and money laundering. What is striking is that they do not mention the so-called stablecoins despite the fact that they are precisely not volatile, on the contrary, their protocols indicate that they will always be ensuring parity with the dollar.

We can argue if the backup to maintain that parity is all that transparent and methodical that is required, I have already spoken on some occasion that some of the backup assets are not really all that they claim to be, but at least so far, the thing seems to be going safely and seriously.

Regarding the parity with the dollar, in some South American countries where there are inflationary processes and restrictions on the purchase and sale of foreign currency, (for example in mine) these currencies are presented as an ideal alternative to preserve the value of our savings, also for money transfers and in many cases they are an alternative for a large number of people who are outside the formal financial systems, here in Argentina, the latest measurements indicate that half of the inhabitants are unbanked and move in the informal economy.

One of our unicorns, I mean Mercado Libre, has had enormous success with its virtual wallet application in pesos called Mercado Pago since it has brought many people closer to a kind of banking by being able to use their money and pay from the phone or from a card issued by the same company. To deposit funds, it is enough to go to a branch of a payment company and deposit the money through the window so that in a few minutes it is credited to your account and available to buy, pay for services or simply leave it there receiving an interest (which of course not compensates for inflation).

Stablecoins provide something similar, but better, they bring the real economy closer to people, including those who are not banked, who will not have greater requirements to open a wallet and buy and store there a currency that will be protected from inflation and available for being used or transferred without the payment of abusive commissions that today are charged in remittances abroad.

People who are unbanked are more vulnerable and harmed by the financial system, stable cryptocurrencies, and the decentralized financial system can and are helping greater equity. Of course, there is still a long way to go, mainly in legal matters and regulations, but the foundations are laid and the future is promising.
