Watching the NBA Finals for pandemic entertainment…

Lebron and the old guards versus Jimmy Butler’s young pups of the Miami Heat did not disappoint with the six game series. The favorites took home the trophy and marked the 17th Championship for the Los Angeles Lakers who are now tied with the Boston Celtics for the all-time leader in number of championships for the National Basketball Association.

I’ve been following the Lakers since Magic and Kareem’s Showtime Lakers, which added extra motivation to watch the games. This iteration of the Lakers should be one of the best after the Kobe-Shaq era if they don’t break it up after the season.

Excellence is borne out of the blood, sweat and tears of the many people involved to make a player great and the team great. Winning an NBA World Championship represents the highest level of excellence in sports and athletics, which made me think about blogging and content creation.

How do I evaluate myself when it comes to blogging and creating content for the #hive community and the web in general. Here's my take on the three things that make a quality hive post.

Aritstotle famously said that:

“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit.”

So, if excellence is a habit, what habits do I need to follow, as a #hive blogger, in uploading quality posts to the blockchain?

I found this article by @jason04 to be an excellent source of ideas and inspiration on how to make a post visually appealing. I used the text hyperlink, canva for the thumbnail and formatting suggestions from Jason’s blog. You will find many more useful ways to improve the way you post just by following some of his simple suggestions.

Hive rewards engagement. This is one of the features that make the #hive platform a ‘better’ choice. If we remove the social engagement aspect and focus on the monetary part, it makes sense to curate posts that appeal to you, that tickles your fancy or supports a similar cause; this feature endears hiveans to engage with others on the platform and to choose ‘quality’ posts with upvotes, comments, reblogs and replies.

@abh12345’s The Hive Engagement League even tracks down and rewards hiveans with the best engagement based on an engagement criteria that includes: posts, comments, number of people spoken to, comments outside of own posts, unique author posts, comment depth / length, upvotes to others/different authors and self-votes.

Content is King

  1. CONTENT

Have you ever come across the phrase “content is king”?

Well, it comes from an essay penned by Bill Gates sharing his views about the internet and the role of content in the near future. What he was talking about back then is now a reality; the #hive ecosystem brings it a step higher by rewarding all participants, sharing the value to everyone involved through monetization whether you are the author, curator, commenter or sharer.

A post might be well arranged but without good content it is just an example of good formatting and layout. Content is what engages the readers to react to your post. It creates the entertainment value or the informational aspect needed by the reader who consumes the article.

It should help if the article is posted in the right community and with the right tags also. A #foodie article posted in the @leofinance community might not be the best match.

Here is an example of an excellent post from @ybanezkim26: well-written, fantastic layout, good photos and wonderful content that invites us to go visit the places described in the post. Notice that it was posted in the @haveyoubeenhere community, a travel community.

CONCLUSION

I know that I have a long way to go before I constantly produce quality articles that will meet the discerning taste of hive curators but learning is a never ending process. I learn more about the platform every time I read others’ posts and understand the audience that relates to the topics I like writing about. Engaging is easy, there are dozens of communities that one can choose from and the people are awesome; for me HIVE is one of the best, if not the best, online communities on the web.

Lastly, excellence is about improving oneself, thinking out of the box and learning from others. This comes with a little bit of humility that I feel would greatly benefit a blogger; feedback, both positive and negative, are what makes us better.

“I think it’s important to have a feedback loop. Where you’re thinking about what you’ve done and how you could be doing it better.” | ELON MUSK

That’s it for now. I am constantly reflecting about how to improve my blog and have come across awesome people here on HIVE who’ve given me great feedback and steady advice. Maraming salamat. :)
