Let's discover Instagram possibilities/actions! Do you know them all?

Hello everyone! Yesterday I posted a post about my journey with social media and I mentioned that one of my accounts there has 12K followers. I saw that many of you were interested and came back to ask a few questions as well as to express your opinion. Thank you for that!

Instagram is 10 years old and maintains a billion+ users active on the platform monthly basis, for the last 2 years when it reached that milestone.

When your goal is to communicate to loads of people, and if you have visual content to share - then Instagram is not a means to let go.

Many businesses actually more than 25 million are already participating in this Facebook owned platform uploading daily their moments and their offers.

What do you need to create an account on Instagram?

You need a smartphone, it could have IOS or Android - and you just download the app from the apple or play store.

To make your account, you will need an email address (or a mobile number) and also a password. You will need to confirm the email or the phone number.

You can also use a laptop to create an account, but it is more complicated to post from a desktop. Besides, users prefer it because of its functionality to be available via their smartphone.

What to do after you create your account?

I assume you already picked a fitting username, so you now can add profile information, bio, and also a profile photo.

I will not go into the complicated stuff (about changing your account to a business account - yet) - I ll keep it for a later post!

In the past you could only change this information through your smartphone - Now it is also possible to do it via a browser on your laptop.

Make sure you add a link in your bio, you got no other chance to do so
(other than use a paid add or reach 10K followers)

I am a new Instagram user, what can I do?

Start by posting a photo you wish to share and let the people who come by know what you will be posting about.
Make sure to include some hashtags about your photo.

I suggest that you search some hashtags of your interest and find users to follow/interact/like their photos or comment (thoughtfully).

A simple "I am new on insta and just followed you because I find your profile very inspiring" can go a long way

There are automatic apps to use - but I despise them and do not recommend them.

What can a user do other than post images?

For yourself :)

  • You can post a video
  • You can post a set of videos+photos
  • You can create an post a story (by clicking on the + symbol right on your profile image)
  • You can post an IGTV video (Instagram plans on monetizing those by placing ads) - these are videos longer than 1 minute
  • You can create highlights (like folders on your profile that have specific photos/videos by you or by others)

Actually the stories you post are visible only for 24h on your profile, but if you put them in your profile - they are visible until you remove them.
Attention: You may add up to 100 photos or videos to a Highlight, and there's no limit to the number of Highlights you can create.

(There are also many business tools, such as connecting your e-shop etc - but we can talk about it in a next post)

For other users :)

  • You can 'repost' a photo by someone else (if you do it is recommended that you tag them both on the photo and also in the text - you need a special application for this)
  • You can share someone's post as a story (and if someone clicks - the visit the other person's post) This is known as 'shout-out' and sometimes people will come to you and ask "Shoutout for shoutout"? You don't have to do it, but it is nice to reciprocate a shout out for someone, if they do it for you :)
  • You can like or comment on users' photos/videos/posts
  • You can reply to other users' stories
  • You can save your posts or other people posts on specific folders that you create
  • You can send a direct message (dm)

Are there limitations?

Yes, there are

  • Instagram has been trying to deal with a great number of spam/fake/abusive accounts.

They have algorithms and safety guidelines in place. All users' actions are monitored and whenever there is a not-normal activity (such as massive new follows, too many likes to photos, too many comments) - they may ban the user, block them or make them vanish for some time.

  • Every user can only follow up to 7500 users

  • The users may not post about:

    Buying and selling firearm Buying and selling alcohol Buying and selling tobacco An illegal prescription drug (even if legal in your region) Sale of live animals Online gambling Sexual content Hate speech Blackmailing or harassing someone Encourage the violence Threats of physical harm, financial harm, vandalism, etc. Encouraging people to embrace self-injury Videos of intense and violence

  • Limitations in direct messages If you are a new user, don't overdo it with sending many dms, many likes or comments. Instagram has not published specific numbers but as per the above website, a total of 500 actions are allowed on a daily basis for a new account.

I created an account; How easy is it to grow?

I would not say it is easy to grow your numbers on Instagram, at the moment. Depending on your goals and targets, I would say that it will need approximately 1-2 hours a day - to be able to reach a substantial number of followers in the next months. It will take a plan, great content, to know the guidelines and to notice what

Something you need to remember is that it is important to socialize, but without overdoing it.
