With no block number or TXID, use this weird trick in Hiveblocks to jump around your account history on the blockchain.

The 3 Searches Allowed by Hiveblocks

If you know the block number of a transaction, you can use the block explorer Hiveblocks to view all the transactions within that block.

If you know the TXID (transaction ID), you can use Hiveblocks to view all the details for that particular transaction.

Using an account name (without the @ prefix), virtually all account history associated with that account can be retrieved in reverse chronological order from the present all the way back to the account's first entry on the blockchain.

When we first visit Hiveblocks, we see a URL with only the protocol https:// and domain name hiveblocks.com. This is the Base URL, or the home page URL. The most recent transactions for the entire blockchain appear on this page.

How Extensive Can a Hiver's Account Activity Be?

A search by account name[🕶️] can span many pages:

  • For the @magnacarta account, about 375 pages cover 17 months on the blockchain. For a Hiver with both the longevity (Summer 2017) and the activity of @taskmaster4450, the search results take up around 17,662 pages**.
  • Even the @null account has about 3,933 pages of blockchain activity.

[🕶️] Page counts are as of 2022-September-14 2:15pm ET (New York).

A Couple of Notes about the Account Activity Search Results Page

  • Each full page of an account's blockchain activity contains about 250 transactions-- either actions by the account holder, or activity toward the account holder.
  • The page navigation section is close to the bottom of each page of account history.

Some Math

The table below shows approximate transaction counts based on the figures noted earlier:

AccountPagesTransaction Count
@magnacarta37593,750
@taskmaster445017,6624,415,500
@null3,933983,250

There is no relationship between pages and transaction counts.

Reviewing Account Activity Page by Page

Even for an average Hiver with about 1 year on the blokchain and average activity, it can take a while to view account history if we do that in sequential order using the page navigation bar.

If we use the page navigation bar near the bottom of each page, we have to pass by about 250 transactions first. Keyboard tricks can help, but only if we're in the habit of using them. Even using scrollbars can give the sensation of vanishing life force.

While we won't be able to avoid doing those things, we can at least minimize how often we do them. The upcoming edited screen captures hint at the solution.

Since the Hiveblocks home page shows only the Base URL, we only see one piece. So we enter an account name to search by account history. Page 1 of search results for the account looks something like this:

At this point we see a URL with 2 pieces, the Base URL and the account name.

Only 2 pieces appear because we're on Page 1 of the account's search results. For Page 1, the 3rd piece is optional. For all other pages (including Page 2), the 3rd piece is required.

These 2 URLs are equivalent:

URLPieces Shown
https://hiveblocks.com/@magnacartaBase URL + / + Account
https://hiveblocks.com/@magnacarta?page=1Base URL + / + Account + ?page= + Page Number

When using the navigation bar to visit the last page (in this case, Page 375), this is what the URL looks like:

The URL is almost the same; only the page number changed. So this shows...

The Weird Trick in Hiveblocks To Jump Around Account Activity

Change the number after ?page= at the end of the URL.

While the navigation bar at the bottom of the search results page lets us go to any page shown on that bar, what if we want to get to a page whose number is covered by the ellipsis-- ...-- such as Page 187? Do we really need to scroll past about 250 transactions only to see that the page we want isn't listed on that navigation bar?

The quickest way to bring up that page is by modifying the URL using this trick.

After modifying the URL to include Page 187, this is what the URL for Hiveblocks looks like:

To confirm that Page 187 is what's on the screen, here's the navigation bar at the bottom of the screen:

Just My Two Sats

Hiveblocks lets people search the blockchain by block number, transaction ID, or account name. Account activity is grouped by pages, and each page contains about 250 transactions.

Whether an account is has 100 pages within a year or is an account going back to Steemit days and has tens of thousands of pages, searching through it isn't an easy task.

One weird trick to jump around the search results for account history takes advantage of one detail:

  • the URL used for account history searches is made of 3 pieces, and only the 3rd piece varies.

By editing the URL to point to a different page, Hiveblocks will present account history shown on that page.

It can still take a long time to locate the desired account history, but this trick should make it quicker, less painful, and leave us with more life-force.
