There are 7885 coins listed on Coingecko right now. I haven't paid attention to that number for a very long time. But when I did a few years ago, that number was considerably smaller. The long tail of blockchain projects in existence has grown massively. Some of the new coins have reached the first page (the top 100). A few of them are new stablecoins, some are projects that actually implement an idea that can reasonably expected to hold massive of potential such as ChainLink (a decentralized network of oracles whose purpose is to link external events with blockchains). Some are exchange tokens. Dozens are decentralized finance coins or smart contract platforms.

A lot of the new coins in the top 100 were created last year. They are unproven projects obviously trying to tap into the growing DeFi hype. Those that were around in early 2018 all saw a massive pump. Considering the fact that Hive is a few places below the 100th out of a total number of coins being almost 8000 means that, relatively speaking, Hive's position is not worse than Steem's was when there were half as many coins while Steem was sitting close to the 50th position.

There is no reason to lose your cool over Hive falling to the second page of the list on Coingecko.

Most importantly: Do not let any greedy and short-sighted person fool you into believing that the content reward pool should be done away with and that Hive should become just another platform where staking rewards are the only way to earn or otherwise this project is done for before long.

The growth of Bitcoin's market cap drives the entire space. If we see Bitcoin's market cap jump by an order of magnitude towards the end of the new bull market we seem to be in the early stages of, I personally believe much of that massive growth in market cap will trickle down to the long tail of the altcoin market as well. And Hive is nowhere near the tail. Close to the 100th position in market cap, Hive is firmly in the big fat beginning of the altcoin spectrum.

When it comes to the adoption of Hive, you can go and check out this post of mine in which I discuss that:
