Popularity Pays!!

Disclaimer: I’m a serial autovoter and I do gain benefit from it, so this post might seem hypocritical, but it is not. It’s just my initial conclusion, and am looking forward to any discord.

Autovoting is a tricky subject. It has an effect on everything, from author rewards to curation. No matter your opinion on this matter, it warrants further discussions:

It’s Like I’m In High School Again!

It’s all about popularity! A popularity of a Hiver is often reflected in the size of their “fanbase.” More often than not, their post rewards are largely made up of autovotes.

Curation

Autovoting does not only advantage authors, but curators also benefit. If a curator wants to earn a higher APR, they should probably be using autovoting. Timely autovote an author who consistently gets big post rewards, and get a larger portion of the curation rewards!

Content Discovery

Autovoting is bad for content discovery. The posts in “trending” are often the same authors, and I bet the majority of the rewards are from their fanbase.

Decrease Activity

I have no data on this, but I bet you a lot of account owners just set their autovotes and leave. The majestic autovoting robots can earn, with no effort of their own. Force them to maually curate, for a more fair reward distribution.

The Little Guy Gets Screwed

This system cannot be good for the little guy who just came on to the scene! It must be discouraging to get pennies for a well written post, while comparable posts get $10-30, or more...

Just A Musing

Autovoting definitely benefits me... and probably you, but I tend to think it’s bad for the overall blockchain. I believe it adds more to the income inequality here, by skewing the token distribution to the “popular.”

I’m heavily invested in Hive because it’s a great technology with great benefits and potential- I just think autovoting can be bad for retention and growth! What do you think?
