If you play Splinterlands and keep an eye on the market, you would have noticed the price of Beta cards plummeting in recent weeks due to a couple of Whales selling them off.

As it stands there are still quite a few copies of cheap Beta cards available, but now they're 'on sale' are they worth buying compared to similar-ish Untamed or Reward cards, which have generally lost less of their value in recent weeks?

I know it's difficult to make comparisons because each card is slightly different, but there are some that perform broadly similar functions.

Below I've focused on five Beta cards and their 'kind of Untamed etc. equivalents' from the water splinter...

In the table below, the top batch of five are all Betas, and the bottom batch either rewards, untamed or promos, with the rough equivalents being in the same order.

I've worked out the cost to 'optimum level' - quite often it's not worth levelling them up to full - and it turns out that even with the significant reduction in cost, it's only really worth buying 2 out of the 5 Beta cards I've listed, at least in terms of pure cost per damage.

  • The Sabre Shark comes out slightly cheaper than the coral wraith, both sneak cards - and the sabre shark does more damage per mana.
  • The Crustacean is something a lot of people play, but personally I think the Mermaid Healer is more useful, and that's a lot cheaper atm.
  • Captain's Ghost to my mind performs a similar 'heavy magic damage' function to the Medusa, though more expensive in terms of mana.
  • The Pirate Captain is very cheap, but nowhere near as cheap as the sniping Whale - I guess this shows that snipe isn't Water's thing!
  • Finally two damage cards - the Naga Warrior is CHEAP compared to the Harpoonist beta card.

So which of these Beta cards are worth buying?

I surprised myself with this analysis and bought a Level 4 Naga Warrior:

I've also seen this a lot recently in low mana and melee only battles, I'm sick of getting retaliated against, so everyone else can have some back now!

As to the rest, I've concluded the snipe cards aren't worth it - there's a reason they're cheap!

I've bought an L8 shark - just need to get him up to L9, and I've got an L4 Wraith, the combination of both could be useful.

I already had a medusa up to the stun level, but if I had my time again I could probably live without her given some of the new cards.

I would probably say the same about the crustacean too - it's a perpetually played card, but I think that might just be out of habit, I'm sure there are better options and combinations out there. It's pricey for what you get!

Elsewhere, we're still waiting for the price of those damn Hydras to go down, come on TH12 - no one's paying $4.50 a card!
