I bought my Bayliss Hair Clippers around 26 years ago, shortly after I'd had my (horribly matted) dreadlocks cut off and didn't really like the normal hairstyle the barber had given me, so decided to risk the shave.

And I never looked back - as the luck of genetics would have it, I'm blessed with a suitably aesthetic head for a number 0, which has been my preferred shave setting for the last 26 years.

I didn't realise it at the time, but those 'cheap but decent' clippers I bought for around £20 would turn out to be one of my best investments ever.

They are still with me, 26 years later, going strong, albeit with a very twisted power cable and one of the four guards having been lost, there aren't many items I've owned for such a long period of time.

I tend to shave my head every 4-6 weeks, so around 10 times a year on average.

10 times 26 years = 260 head shaves in total over the period.

The last time I accidentally got my head shaved, following a beard trim, when I stupidly thought that would be a freebie on top, it cost me £8 (!).

Using that £8 as a basis, 8 times 260 = $2080.

Damn, for a £20 initial investment, minus some electricity, that is a saving of $2050 over 26 years, or around $90 a year, or (funnily enough based on the cost of that cut) around £6-7 a month.

Now it's not a life changing amount of money, but this is precisely the kind of small investment I really like, a little £20 in ends up saving me an absolute fortune - in terms of APR that's around 450%.

Nice!

In terms of time, I'm going to say it's about equal - the time to shave my own head compared to going to the barbers, obviously the later is longer but I'd honestly probably do the barbers during another trip out, so for the extra time I'm 'in there' it's pretty much break even with my DIY job!

I might even treat them to an extra clean tonight!
