I've just been gifted £500 (kind of, the bill for the work on my house to make it gas-safety compliant was a lot cheaper than I'd anticipated), so I'm thinking of another little-in with crypto.

I want to buy something a little different other than my usual BTC, ETH, LTC, LEO, and I was curious to see what the Google Oracle would tell me about what Crypto I should buy, and do some SEO analysis of why certain sites get to the top of Google search returns...

I simply typed 'what crypto should I buy?' into Google and read what came up - here are the results of the top five search returns:

It's a very disappointing and not very informative set of results I'm afraid. All the top four sites list BTC as their main buy, the final site's focus was on the top coins besides BTC.

After BTC it just seems to be ETH/ LTC/ XRP and BCH in 2-4th slots.

And the results further down just seem to be the usual suspects: I can't believe TRON features so heavily, in 3 out of 5! And Binance coin is there in 3/5 as well.

Top Five Search Return Article titles and their slugs

The top five, in case you're interested, are as follows:

  • Search Return 1: Trading Education: What top 10 cryptocurrencies to invest in 2020?

  • Search Return 2: What's the best cryptocurrency to invest in now?

  • Search return 5: The 10 most important currencies other than Bitcoin

Of course these may have been influenced by my own browsing history, but this is from Brave, so maybe not?!?

What crypto should I buy? Top search returns analysis

What's interesting about the top search returns are that four out of five of them are from general trading and economics and sites and only one from a crypto site (Crypterium).

This confirms what I thought about the above list: that all the authors have done (and were probably paid to do) is dig around the main crypto sites and then list down the coins with the biggest market caps and then a few others of 'best in category' - many of the sites break down their lists based on 'best for transaction speed', 'best for blockchain' and so on.

Whether they are qualified or not, these people are ranking for search returns, and so it's interesting to see what slugs they use to rank - slugs being the actual end url, rather than the titles, which I've included below.

You can see that every single one has a nice sumple slug:

  • what top 10 cryptocurrencies...
  • what's the best cryptocurrency to buy
  • best cryptocurrencies to invest in
  • (my fave) best-cryptocurrency
  • most important cryptos besides btc.

The final one is from Investopedia, which probably ranks just because it's a huge site, so the slug matters less.

As to the articles themselves, they all have the same general structure - a quick introductory section, maybe a section on what cryptocurrency is and how to buy it, and then the following sections are all just on the top 5-10 coins.

Then the obligatory 'risk' closing section.

Each section is from between 100-200 words, making each article between 1000-1500 words generally.

Is the information from these sites useful?

Well, as someone who knows a bit about Crypto, no, not really, it's 85% the same and it seems to be just ripped off from the main Crypto sites, but I've got to hand it to the article creators for a liquid SEO performance, that they have all got spot-on (unsurprisingly)

Having said that if I was a newbie to crypto, they're all saying 'buy Bitcoin' and mostly LTC and ETH which is pretty much what I've been doing for years anyway, so it's hardly bad information either!

Can LEO do better?

I've seen a lot more interesting articles on LEO making crypto recommendations, and recommendations for crypto that's a lot more interesting than the usual suspects in the five sites above, so if anyone wants to lay any advice (which we both know isn't financial advice) on me, I'm open to suggestions....!

Final thoughts on SEOing for yer LEO articles...

The above articles are liquid examples of how to write for SEO (clearly done by professionals on SEO, rather than professionals on the topics being written about) so you could do a lot worse than analyse them and tweak your posts accordingly if you want to rank for any particular topic!

The general gist is this:

  • 1000 to 1500 words

  • 6-10 short sections with clear headings

  • keep your slug simple

  • Pictures also help, tagged appropriately!
