SteemCity is brand new and the first game on Steem based on Steem-Engine NFT tokens. Every token represents a  single card in the game. Build your city, own your city!

Steem Games - Part 2

When I started this small series, I just wanted to give you heads up about two brand new games that were released on the Steem blockchain earlier this week. The post ended up a lot longer than I originally intended, so I decided to split it up in two parts.

Yesterday I published part 1: 'New Steem Games - Part 1: Holybread'. You probably guessed it; in that post I talked a bit about the latest Steem hype: Holybread.

Today, I want to tell you a bit more about SteemCity. 'A bit', yes, because I'm still trying to wrap my head around this game. Me and numbers... we don't get along very well. The game is a bit of a challenge, to say the lest, but a very interesting one.

What Is SteemCity?

While Holybread is seriously hyped, SteemCity is more of an underdog.

The game is still in a very early stage of development, but live. The overwhelming response was a bit unexpected, especially since no real promotion was done. But the news spread fast, and people started joining right after the word was out.

A website hasn't been designed (yet), but the game is fully functional and handled in the dedicated Discord channel.

One of the things that makes SteemCity unique is the fact that the game is built using the brand new NFT tokens on Steem-Engine. NFT's (non-fungable tokens) are unique tokens that can be bought, sold, earned. and/or traded.

All SteemCity cards are NFT's, and can be bought from the game account, but can also be traded (sold/bought) in the NFT section of Steem-Engine.

A description of the game as stated by the developer, @gerber:

Steemcity is a city simulator game based on NFT tokens representing cards in game. Your cards collection = your city.

SteemCity Basics

To start the game, you need to buy a number of cards. you can pay for the cards with Steem.

Each card costs 4 Steem, and you can buy a maximum of 10 cards per transaction. (Multiple transactions are allowed, of course.) To buy, you simply send 4 Steem per card to the @steemcitysim account. Cards will then automatically be sent to your wallet on the Steem-Engine NFT exchange.

The distribution of cards is completely random. You never know what you're going to get. A card can represent a house, a weed dispensary, an airport, a cinema or even a police station or a garbage dump. Every card comes with different stats regarding popularity, population and income. Your goal is to make all the aspects work together and build a successful city.

The game has 2 reward pools set into place: a Steem reward pool and a SIM reward pool (SIM being the in-game currency, which can be sold and bought on the market. It can also be used to buy more cards (800 SIM/card)).

The size of the reward pool depends on how many active members and card buyers there have been on a specific day, and the rewards will be distributed according to each player's level / city income. SIM rewards are paid out daily, Steem rewards weekly.

From the unofficial launch post:

As you buy more cards, your number of buildings & rankings will grow higher which will enable you to grab more of the daily prize pools.

In other words, by building your city, you will be mining SIM tokens based on the income your city generates.

A Closer Look

As I stated before, the game is still in early development. A website is yet to come, but the game as it is now is fully playable in the Discord server.

So, you send Steem, you get NFT tokens in return. Every NFT token represents a card. Right now there are 16 different cards you can use to build your city.

Let me show you how my city looks today:

As you can see, there's quite some variety.

Now, every building comes with unique stats regarding popularity, population, income and workers.

Some examples:

Basic Homes, Luxury Homes and Apartments are important, because they come with the population that is needed to fill the worker slots in the other buildings. Once you have enough workers for a building, it will start generating income. As I explained before, that income will determine the share of the reward pool you'll get.

It's basically a balancing game. All stats of all cards are combined, and it is your job to make sure you optimize your city, and maximize your income.

Every single number has an effect on the overall picture. A high popularity number gives you a population bonus, but the higher your popularity, the more workers you need. To make things even more interesting, there are also cards that have a negative influence on things like popularity.

To find the balance, you can remove buildings from your city by listing the cards on the NFT market. They are then excluded from your stats, which can boost your performance.

Because they are NFT's, all cards can easily be sold - and bought - on the market. You can expand your city with the cards/buildings you need, and get rid of those that have a negative influence on your city income by trading them with your fellow players.

Building your city, you need to consider all options. Buildings like the gym, the police station and the cinema decrease crime rate in your city. When you have those, the chances that your bank(s) will be robbed will be reduced. But if you want to have that many buildings, you need a lot of homes, to make sure there's enough population to fill all workers-spots.

You'll find yourself constantly tweaking and adjusting in order to find the perfect balance and make the most out of your city.

...

I don't have a clue if all of the above makes any sense to you or not. I'm still trying to figure out the game myself, lol.

The master of the game, the almighty @gerber, has planned to write a post about SteemCity. So if you want to know more, I suggest you keep an eye out for that one. Or better yet, pay a visit to the Discord server and get in on the action.

My Experience

Like I said: a big part of the game is still a mystery to me, haha.

I'm not a numbers-person. Never have been, never will be. And truth to be told, this game is all about numbers.

But in spite of the fact that I'm having a really hard time wrapping my head around everything, I'm intrigued. Even though I'm suffering from an information overload, I'm interested enough to at least try to add up all the numbers and look for the relative context. That's kind of a big deal, if I may say so myself. In general, I simply ignore numbers and focus on what I really love: letters, words and sentences.

I even created an excel sheet to keep the overview - something I rarely do - and find myself calculating and organizing more often than I could have ever imagined. There's just something about this game that grabbed my interest - even though my brain is working overtime.

What helps is that - when I'm lost again - I can just post a message in the Discord server and wait until @gerber or another player is around to get the help I need to keep going.

One of the things that makes this such a great idea, is that it provides you with a fun learning experience when it comes to NFT's. The release of NFT's was kind of a big deal on Steem, but personally, I never felt the urge to go digging for information and learn more about them. SteemCity encouraged me to explore the NFT marketplace (I didn't even know there was one before I started playing) and I'm getting used to buying, selling and trading.

SteemCity is not free to play, but you invest just as much or as little as you want to. Balancing a small city is just as hard as balancing a large one (...I think, lol).

The money from card sales is added to the reward pools, so the more people start playing, the bigger the reward pools grow, and the more dividends every one earns.

New players are dropping into the Discord server constantly, and it looks like SteemCity is growing into a popular investment game very fast. And from what I've heard, this is just the tip of the iceberg. @gerber has a lot more tricks up his sleeve and will keep adding new cards and features.

If you want my honest opinion, let me give it to you: I think this is definitely a game worth to explore.
