Hurry, it’s another June 12, democracy day they call it while in fact, Nigeria is actually still in bondage and they lack direction to this date. I wonder why so many people choose to celebrate this day up to this moment considering the current situation of things in Nigeria. When Nigeria current state is critically examined, it will dawn on us that nothing is worth celebrating. It should actually be a time for detailed reflection of how far we have come and so far, we seem to be moving backward in Nigeria.

Democracy day as June 12 is popularly known for is supposed to be a day to celebrate good governance from the leaders but it’s a pity that we Nigerians only have theories of how a good leader or government is supposed to operate and that is because we have rarely got few of them in power.  Nigeria has always been ruled by incompetent and bad leaders. Some of these leaders have no clue of what was expected of them while in office and it shows how clueless they are.

It’s no longer surprising that some individuals in power feel that the position they occupy is a birthright and also an avenue to acquire wealth. They tend to forget that what democracy preaches is that people in power are only there to serve their subjects but rather than serving them, this leader also exploits our hard earn money through the increment of tax and levies and yet we aren’t seeing the purpose of what these funds are been collected for. That’s corruption with no iota of shame.

Their incompetency reflects on the people they govern and the economy as a whole. Haven’t you ever wondered why Nigeria is still in debt despite being one of the top-selling crude oil nations coupled with our rich agricultural products gotten from the soil and not also forgetting the amount of looted money that is been returned back into the country on daily basis? This goes a long way to highlight the height of gross miss-management of funds by those in office coupled with corruption.

Even with the news of this funds coming in, poverty rate keeps increasing in the economy due to lack of provision of basic amenities and infrastructural facilities such as good roads, water, schools, libraries and a whole lots of them. Not forgetting that the supposed leaders are not even concerned with providing jobs, which has led to an increase in the rate of unemployment in the country. Funny fact is that due to the high rate of unemployment, so many immoral and criminal activities are also increasing.

This begs the question on whether this Democracy day is worth celebrating in Nigeria because sincerely speaking it feels like the people are actually serving those in power instead of the other way around. The rulers careless on the issue of security and as long as they are not affected in any way, they surely turn a blind eye to it.  That has made way for an increase of so many issues that need an urgent response; issues such as rape, internet fraudsters and police brutality.

As I bring to close this piece, I call for a thorough evaluation and reflection from those in power to rate their activities so far in accordance to Democracy principles, I am sure many of them will agree with me that they have failed woefully as a leader and as a human in discharging their duties to mankind.
