Greetings, gardeners! My ayocote bean plant has been producing many buds these past few days and now the first ones are in full bloom. This is a striking color for a bean flower since most common beans like Phaseolus vulgaris have white flowers or pale pink flowers.

The ayocote is Phaseolus coccineus but I read that it can still hybridize with the common bean. Most of my P. vulgaris have already bloomed and are towards the end of their life cycle so I don't think they will hybridize. Actually, I don't know if the ayocote will even have a chance for its seeds to mature. Last time the frost came when the beans were still green. I even started this plant indoors and planted it outside pretty early in the spring. You may remember I had to place a dome over it to keep it warm. If I don't get a harvest this year from it, I'll know it can't grow here. Then I'll just plant its close cousin the scarlet runner bean, a different variety of the same species.
My next plan for the ayocote bean is to take some to Mexico and plant them there. That's where this variety is from so it should do fine there. It used to be a favorite down there before it fell out of favor and was all but forgotten. Maybe by bringing some back to their homelands I'll start a bean revolution! I have yet to try these beans in any dishes but I read that their flavor is excellent! Until our next garden update This is proto26 signing off.
