HIVE Power Up Day

On the 1st of each month, everyone with a Hive account is encouraged to power up whatever liquid HIVE they have and receive some additional prizes as an incentive to do so with thanks to:

  • The wicked awesomesauce organisation from @traciyork - check her post about it here
  • @victoribsb for the Spanish community - check her post about it here.
  • And now the @hivebuzz team for some addictive badge incentives - check their post about it here

Why Power Up Though?

These are some of the benefits you get from powering up and investing in the long term:

  1. Stronger votes on witnesses & proposals - extremely important to make sure that you are using your witness and proposal votes to ensure the security and development of the network and having more HIVE Power gives you a bigger say in these matters.

  2. Earning more curation rewards - if you upvote content, you will earn as well (known as curation rewards) so the more Hive Power you have, the more you can potentially earn back

  3. Earning "interest" by holding Hive Power - maybe you didn't know this but you will also earn HIVE passively at about 3% per year of what you currently have powered up so the more HIVE you have, the more you can earn from just holding!

  4. Earn by delegating - delegating is effectively "loaning" out your HIVE Power to others and some accounts may offer you a daily payment for doing so. If you have more to delegate, you can earn more by delegating which helps grow your balance even more!


OK, powering up a couple of HIVE here or there won't have too much of an impact in the short term but when you compound all of these factors together over time then you'll see how things grow. To give you an example, let's look at my account.

I started here in March 2018 with absolutely nothing, clueless, didn't even know how to write a post without the help of Mr Mark Down. Over that time, I've posted, voted, delegated, held and never powered down HIVE and am now close to my target of Orca via a combination of buying, posting, entering contests etc.

So it takes time but yeah, it's pretty cool!

But if you really do need the money to pay for living, then do what you need to do and don't feel bad about it!! Remember, it takes a second to power up but 13 weeks to power down and get it all back again.

From what I gather, you can get the first badge on the left by powering up 10 HIVE but the other badges are anyone's guess as to how much you need to power up. Needless to say, I'm going for the absolute hench bee on the right who hasn't missed chest day for 10 years so collecting whatever liquid HIVE I can ready to power up on 1st! Ooomph 💪
