I've signed up to the beta of Voice, I'm extremely interested in what they have to offer...

Today, Feb. 14th, Block. One's Voice platform launches in a closed beta. Only select people are being invited in, by batches, at the moment.

What do they have that competes with Steem? Should we shudder in fear, or delight in joy? Let's discuss...

Chapter 1: First Things First... That Email... 🧐

In the announcement email, they mention a few bullet points I'd like to go over with my personal opinions. First impressions matter, so here are mine.

  • Initially, Voice Beta will be released to those residing in the United States.

A bit of a bummer for me, as I like to share my platforms with those around the world. I enjoy seeing different photos, hearing different stories, and learning new cultures. But, I suppose I understand the desire for a more tightly controlled beta roll out. Not a huge deal.

  • The Voice Tokens that users receive during beta are not transferable and will be reset at a later date (but don’t worry, we’ve got some cool features coming to reward beta testers).

Yikes. But, again, part of me does understand. This is beta software, and I'm sure Block. One doesn't want to risk someone finding a bug / glitch that allows them to own a bajillion tokens on day one & completely ruin the experience. I just hope that the "cool features to reward beta testers" will actually be "cool features". We are testing a new platform, helping them create a polished product, and distributing our content on it, we should be getting something worthwhile.

  • Real verified identity is integral to Voice. You’ll notice that we’re using HooYu to confirm a) you’re a real person and b) reside in the United States.

REAL YIKES. Seriously? I knew they wanted KYC in place, but I don't know... I guess just reading it so blatantly like this makes me not excited. Also, while part of me is happy Block. One is directly storing our private identification data... Who the fuck is HooYu and why should I be trusting them?!

  • You will be asked to take a selfie during Hooyu registration - this will, for now, be your profile picture on Voice, so don’t forget to smile.

DOUBLE-FUCKING-YIKES! Really, like actually really and for real? I'm required to take a real photo and forced to use it on my public profile? ...I don't even know how to address this point other than to say: Don't forget to smile? How about you don't forget to kiss my ass.

Ok, I'm calm again. What'd we learn? Besides Spencer's undying hatred for KYC, we now know just how "beta" Voice's launch is looking to be.

CHAPTER 2: The Voices, So Many Voices! 😵

Since I'm refusing to just randomly hand over my private data, we'll have to take a look at what kind of responses the twitter-sphere is having.

Looks decent, right? Two post earning a respectable 34 replies...

Oh... Oh Jesus... looks like most people aren't too excited anymore...

CHAPTER 3: And Then, There Was Silence... 🤐

But wait... Is that it? It can't be... I felt like I spent my entire day in a Discord talking to people about... something...

What was it again?

Hmmm... Nope, nothing I can think of :^)

in all honesty, this was not the news I expected to wake up to, but I'll refrain from speculating on it until after the livestream tomorrow!

Footnote:

For all of you who are angry that SteemIt Inc. aren't spending money on marketing, let's just all be thankful they didn't blow a 30 million dollar load on a fucking domain name, jesus christ
