Hello everybody!

A couple or so years ago, I decided I wanted to create a family heirloom sterling silver place setting set. My focus in particular was just on the eating implements-not so much the serving implements. So began my journey.

I began by looking at different patterns and what appealed to me. I settled on the Gorham Strasbourg Sterling Silver pattern. Specifically the 1897 pattern. It is nicely ornate; ironically not the most popular Gorham pattern, but that’s okay by me, as I like being different!

The pattern was inspired by the Louis XV period master designers. The design is characterized by scrolls, and pierced shells and reversed scrolls, beginning at the ‘bowl’ of the implement and extending up the tines and ending with a shell motif on the handles. It is ornate and extremely appealing to me.

I was looking on a popular replacement website for old china patterns and also sterling silver flatware, and a 5 piece place setting is currently going for $239.95! That set includes the salad and dinner forks, soup and teaspoons and the dinner knife. I have been able to collect 6 sets, however mine include the iced tea spoon as well as a butter knife. I seem to recall that there were 2 different blades on the dinner knife. The French blade is the one that I have in this set. To date, I am missing one butter knife and one iced tea spoon, but have plans to get those items soon. I have been lucky enough to obtain all of these without any monograms, which has been a popular thing to do with this sort of item.

Once I’ve completed the place settings, I will begin work on obtaining the various other components of the serving implements. I am very happy to have come this far with this and look forward to a dinner in the near future where my children and their wives are all present to eat off of these.

Gorham Strasbourg does also have a china set, however, it is much harder (and pricey) to obtain, so I might have to let that dream go until I find that pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. (For those who have read my Actifit post from the other day, Mike still has not revealed the location of said pot of gold that was at the end of the rainbow that ended on our house, lol!)

Thanks for stopping by and please leave your comments below. Have a wonderful day/evening!
