Oh Joy! I Was a Victim of Debit Card Fraud

I get a lot of spam voicemail. Scam Likely has me on speed dial? So when I got a voicemail saying that possible fraud had been detected on my debit card, I was dubious. It gave a four-digit case number and urged me to call an 888 number. Yeah, right.

My credit union uses local area codes and also has an 800 number toll-free line, not an 888 number. But just to be sure, I logged into my credit union to check my account. And found out that my checking balance was $2.34 and my savings balance was $0.

With a bunch of charges to gas stations, ATM’s, and a Gyros restaurant in Chicago. It’s been six years since I’ve been to the Windy City.

So I called the 888 number to confirm the fraud, and was then directed to cut up my debit card and contact my credit union directly to reverse the charges to restore the funds to my account. Not comfortable trying to do that online or by phone, I hopped into the wombatmobile and drove across town to do it in person.

This is why I greatly prefer having an account with a local credit union rather than with a faceless bankster demon like Wells Fargo. Face to face, it was fixed. Ten minutes tops, maybe less. Sure, maybe in a few years, I will have made the move to a 100% blockchain financial life, but for now my credit union has my back. (The fraud appears to be unrelated to my recent trip to Bangkok for SteemFest4; while there I used cash and an unrelated credit card, not my debit card.)

I will shed no tears when the big bankster oligopoly goes down in flames. But for now at least, I’m glad that my credit union is here for me.
