Business and Investing: There is no "IT," There is only YOU!

Maybe I'm a harsh critic, but I often find it rather amazing how many people wander through life, entranced by the notion that there's some magical "IT" in the universe that will make things in their life work out the way they want.

And I'm not just talking about the Woo-Woo New Age crowd looking for a sprinkling of Rainbow Unicorn Dust to somehow cure their rheumatism, I'm talking about reasonably and otherwise sensible business people's approach to ventures the start or get involved with.

I'm talking about those who create a company or an investment opportunity and operate under the illusion that simply because they had a great idea, some magical "IT" will turn it into a huge success.

"We're just waiting for IT to take off!"

Way back in "another time," I was fairly involved in network marketing and so-called "income opportunities." I eventually left that field simply because it was so dominated by individuals who lived in the world of magical thinking... and I hated to be the bearer of bad news.

Bad news, in this case, would be the reality of how life tends to work vs. the fantasy inside your head.

People would get involved with some Income Scheme and then come to me and say "IT is not working!"

Well, I have news for you: "It" is not gonna magically sprout legs and go somewhere on its own accord... including into your bank account!

"IT" is never going to work, YOU are going to work!

The motivation for this wee "mini rant" was a quick gander at my SteemEngine wallet, and a look at the huge number of SCOT tokens that have been created, which are just "sitting there," unused and untouched...

... and I wonder how many of those were created by individuals operating under the belief that you can just come up with "some idea" and out of the blue people are going to think it's an "awesome idea" and throw lots of money and effort at it and success ensues.

What were you *thinking???

Getting back to "Rainbow Unicorn Dust" for a moment, Mrs. Denmarkguy and I work a lot with the healing and metaphysics field... where "magical thinking" runs rampant. Whether it's well-intentioned healers who create a web site for their services and think that this alone is going to gain them a stream of hot-and-cold running clients, or someone who thinks they can meditate the weeds in their garden away... we see a lack of follow-through as one of the greatest challenges people seem to wrestle with.

What's interesting, though, is how often that kind of thinking spills over into the quite tangible world of business and investing.

And perhaps that is simply one of the root aspects of Human Nature: We'd often rather operate inside a cloud of illusions (that make us feel good) than face the (often harsh) truths of just how much of a tedious and exhausting drag it can be to get from point A to point B.

Surprisingly many people want the Rolls Royce to be the result of "their stroke of genius" rather than the more likely "20 years of backbreaking toil."

Of course, my daughter (28) would come back with something like "Dad, you're obviously not a Millennial!" and she'd only be half joking. That said, she works a lot harder than most of her peers...

But maybe she's got a point, in the sense that I take the notion of working for what you want too seriously... and so, it leaves me to consider the old truism that "success is part IN-spiration and part PER-spiration."

What do YOU think?
