I am hooi yew, in this video, I am going to talk about what is the main thing that give a numismatic collection value?

I had spoken to many people. Some say rarity, some say precious metal, some say the art.

To me, It is about how historically important it is that give it value.

The other factor like art, rarity, or any other you think of actually play very little in deciding the value.

I will take the 2000 Thomas cup silver coin as an example. Did you know there are actually 20,000 pieces issued by BNM? Compared to other silver coins like the 2001 SEA game which BNM issued only 3000 pieces. It was able to sell as high as RM2000 yet the 2001 SEA game silver coin only able to sell as high as RM300.

The reason is during the 90s period Thomas cup events was a golden age for Malaysia badminton. It is historically important to all Malaysian that even non-collector would buy it to remember that period.

I mean If tomorrow BNM issue 100 gold coin about me, will you buy it to collect?

The answer will mostly be No unless you are a hardcore fan of mine. The numismatic collection had always been about history.

Don’t collect just because you read in the newspaper about certain old coins can sell at a very high price or you saw someone post an RM1 coin for sale at RM50,000. Don't collect because someone says the value will go up in the future. Of course, if it goes up then good for you.

Instead, join because of history. The thing that gives it value is the story behind it.

I hope this video will change the way you see about the numismatic collection.
