Yesterday earliest afternoon on our way to an afternoon/evening electronic dance event - the best in town but will tell you about that some other time - I was drawn to this ship. Reason: the quite unusual looks! In my country the Netherlands and my city Amsterdam, we generally don't see ships designed like this.

Dock: Southside IJ next to the taxi ferry to bring us across to the other side Time: Around 14:00 on Sunday afternoon Feb 2nd Weather: Thor is about to wake up

We had to cross the River IJ (map) which separates the city in two. While waiting for the ferry; Friends not too talkative (or was I the one not talking?); My eyes caught this ship and simply had to take a look upclose.

The ship is unusual since it looks quite old taken from design of the hull (the black part). For decades our shipyards don't make ships with such a sharp bow. The white part on top of the black hull makes this ship super unusual; Am pretty sure it was added later. Another element telling it is an old ship, is the wheelhouse; A design that was common decades ago for coastal ships and fisher boats.

Interested to understand the purpose of the ship, I was in for a surprise when standing right next to it. All these tall windows in the front and under the wheelhouse are super new and for sure didn't belong to the original.

No name; No signs; No anything that revealed its identity or purpose leaving me to think this must be used for entertainment purposes of some kind.

Love the fact this ship can set sail as well! Am pretty sure it was not build to be a sailboat, but could be one that was build as a hybrid: motor ship with sails to reduce the oil consumption while sailing the ocean's. Such concept was already being materialised in the 70s of last century but never took off in the sense that such hybrid ships became the new norm.

Sails are not there though, so maybe it's not used for the time being. It's wintertime anyway in my little city; Hardly anyone wants to be in water (or on it for that matter). Guess we'll need to wait until spring before something goes with this floating vehicle.

Have You Seen Something like This?

  • Are you familiar with the design of this ship or elements thereof?
  • What do you think this ships purpose is?

Little Bonus

On our way back from the super cool party, crossing again the river, I could capture this one. Not really sure which one this is, but it could be one of our restaurant boats. Lots of people on board; Music and of course the sound of the engine. Lovely sight; The photo itself only shows half of it though.

Wish it was Spring again
