Developing on Hive has one of the lowest overheads in terms of technical requirements. You could argue that all you need to learn is JavaScript (for the front and backend).

The biggest problem, in my opinion, is the backend component. If you're building a Hive dApp, you need to stream the blockchain and then store it in a local database like Mongo. I know @blocktrades are working on Hive Application Framework, but last time I checked, the server requirements of 4 terbaytes of storage makes it expensive to use, especially for a hobby project without any revenue.

I'm working on a project right now which will provide a hosted Hive backend as a service, with a user friendly interface that would allow you to create a backend similar to services like Firebase.
