Expanding my investments

For quite a while now I have been following some of the people on Hive that dabble in art of stacking silver and gold. It has always intrigued me. I own a handful of old silver coins that I keep in my safe, but I have always wanted to expand my holdings.

More specifically, I like the idea of holding some bars. Even if they are only an ounce, I am still stacking something and investing in something a little more concrete. There are countless arguments for holding precious metals. I am not going to get into all of those here. I know that others have written countless posts that explain the benefits. Feel free to find those yourself.

I was always pretty hesitant to spend some of my paycheck on silver. I can't say why, it is just something that I have never been able to justify despite being aware of the wisdom of stacking metals.

About a week ago, it occurred to me that I have been getting a small amount of income from some BTC mining that I am doing. It isn't a ton, but at about $30 to $35 per ounce for silver, I could easily pick up a couple of pieces to get me started.

Since I already own some satoshi's, I wouldn't feel too badly about using some of my mined sat's to pick up a bar or two.

That led to another dilemma. What should I pick. I was given a lead on some sites that take BTC as payment for precious metals. I started browsing their stock and was immediately overwhelmed with what was available.

I checked my BTC balance this morning and noticed that I have about $150 USD in that account. I started narrowing down what items I might want to pick up. It took a while, but I finally settled on the "random" bars that you see in the picture above through APMEX.

I threw three of them in my cart and then I went to checkout only to find out that if I spent a total of $200 I could get free shipping. That seems like the smarter play, but since I only have $150 in my BTC account I am going to have to wait another week to get the full $200 to get free shipping. That should net me an additional 2 bars so I am okay with that.

Part of the reason I am doing the random thing is because I like the idea of being surprised by what I end up with. I might get some really awesome pieces and I might get some really lame ones. You never know. The neat thing is, they are all still 1 ounce of silver, so even if they aren't super cool, they will still have value.

It also looks like APMEX requires you to use BitPay, so I am going to have to get myself setup with an account on there. That is probably something I should be working on while I wait for the BTC to mine...

Do you hold any silver/gold? Have you ever purchased the random stuff through APMEX before? Did you get some winners or a bunch of trash?
