I listened a podcast some time ago that discussed exactly what you're thinking. There's only a limited amount of data, but there's something: If I remember correctly, in 14th century (or sometime around that) England, the farmers worked about half the days of a year, on average. Yeah, HALF. They had lots of free days during the year to celebrate saints and such. Puts things into perspective with the 40 hour workweek which is the modern standard. We work more than the people in middle ages.
