Closed positions in MDWD and F - February Trading Logs Part 2
More Positions Closed - what am I doing?
In February, I closed two more positions. After increasing price recovery from my inittial investment, and my 5% trailing stop loss risk mitigation strategy, I exited both Ford (F) and Mediwound (MDWD)
Ford Position - A long history.
I have been buying and selling positions in F since at least 2016. This sale makes my third cycle of being completely out for a while.
My initial reasoning for entering Ford was just playing contrarian and chasing some high dividends at the time. Companies like Ford had a long history of always paying their dividends, never cutting, and usually raising them.
Ford Positions -
Date | Trade | Share Price | Gain/(Loss) | APY | Notes |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Oct 2016 | Buy | 11.8 | N/A | Held 71 days | |
Jan 2017 | Sell all | 13.22 | 12% | 96% | |
Apr 2017 | Buy | 11.42 | N/A | ||
Sep 2017 | Sell all | 11.63 | 4% | 11% | w/Dividends |
Feb 2018 | Buy | 10.72 | N/A | ||
Feb 2021 | Sell All | 11.38 | 17% | 5.66% | w/Dividends |
Unfortunately, when COVID hit, F was one of the companies that had to cut their dividend to ensure operations. This, along with the market conditions really pushed the stock price down. I was able to collect the dividends until they were cut and it really helped add to my gains.
I am not sure if I am interested in trading F considering it no longer offers a dividend to mitigate risk, and help hold onto positions longer. Granted my APY on some of these trades is not ideal. I like to trade some of these older more stable companies that tend to have cycles and sector movements. When I think I can make 5-10% share price return in the next 6-18 months and have dividend income I like the risk/reward.
Mediwound Trade
I got into Mediwound while the were working to get FDA approval for a product. I knew at the time there was a high risk/reward depending on approval status - and I did not at the time have a good risk mitigation plan in place. At the time, my strategy was to mitigate risk by only investing half a normal positon.
Mediwound (MDWD) Positions -
Date | Trade | Share Price | Gain/(Loss) | APY | Notes |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Jul 2017 | Buy | 6.68 | N/A | 60% of total position | |
Oct 2017 | Buy | 4.9 | N/A | 40% of total position | |
Oct 2017 | Sell | 5.55 | 16% position | ||
Feb 2021 | Sell all | 5.63 | 84% of position | ||
Feb 2021 | Loss | (6.8%) |
Not great performance - while I lost a small amount in these trades, and I had that money idle for 4 years, I would have been better off taking my losses earlier and putting the money to work elsewhere for a positive return. I still have hopes they can turn it around, and am sure now that I have given up they will have a monster product release and take off.
3 positions closed. MDWD, F and SLV
Those were my sells in the month of Feb when you add in my prior post about SLV I hope to be a bit more active this year if I can manage to keep up on both the research and posting. Its been a great start to the year but there is a lot of unknown yet. I could be interesting, but I am sure most of you prefer the world of crypto and defi with returns in the thousands of percents, not teens!
