This is a mess. It's hard to believe the world is that dependent upon one small stretch of water but it obviously is. I agree with your assessment. I'm sure the original engineers had no concept of the size of vessel that would be traversing this stretch decades later. That said, you would think they would have started to understand the dangers inherent to these giant vessels and would have taken steps to prepare for it. It's absolutely insane this is still "stuck".
