The Hive blockchain, previously Steem started in March 2016. In the first few months there was no author and curation rewards, only witness rewards. There was only mining in the begging and then system was switched to author, curation, and witness rewards. There is also staking rewards for the HP holders, but we will not look into those here.

Although the Hive blockchain was created on March 21, 2020, the stake distribution (except those excluded) is inherited from before. Because of this looking back at things is relevant.

Here we will be looking at all time HIVE rewards by category:

  • Witnesses rewards
  • Curation rewards
  • Author rewards
  • DAO/DHF rewards

As mentioned above there is also staking rewards, where 15% of the total inflation is allocated, but we will not be looking at those here.

Witnesses rewards

Here is the chart for the all-time witness rewards.

Starting from the end of April 2016 up until early December 2016 the witness rewards were higher than now. An approximate 28k HP per day was distributed to witnesses/miners. Afterwards this dropped to 6k and these days and these days 8.2k HP is distributed to witnesses.

The gaps in the chart are usually HardForks and down time of the chain.

A total of 16M HIVE was distributed in the period above to witnesses.

Curation rewards

The chart for all time curation rewards looks like this.

Curation as well as author rewards started with distribution on July 4th 2016. On that date approximately 2.6M STEEM/HIVE was distributed to curators. This massive payout is due to the accumulated rewards from the months before when payouts were not made.

Afterwards the curation rewards are approximately 8k per day, slowly increasing to almost 15k. After the HF21 in September 2019, when the change from 25/75 to 50/50 curators/authors was made, the CR increased to around 27k HP per day.

Author rewards

The chart for all time author rewards looks like this.

The first time payout for author rewards, the same as for the curation rewards happened on July 4th, 2016. On that date almost 3M STEEM/HIVE was distributed to authors, due to the accumulation from the first months.

Afterwards the author rewards are somewhere around 40k HIVE per month, until the HF21 when they dropped to around 26k per day.

Note that a conversion on HBD author rewards to HIVE is made for simplicity.

DAO/DHF rewards

The chart for the all time DAO/DHF rewards looks like this.

The Hive Development Fund was introduced a bit late in September 2019 and since then it is funding projects on the Hive blockchain.
A conversion from HBD to HIVE is made here as well.

Also note that these are payouts to projects only. The part of the inflation that ends up in the DAO account and is not distributed to DAO workers is included.

Total Rewards Distributed

When we combine the charts above, we get something like this.

We can see from the above, that in the first months, only witness/mining rewards were distributed. Author and curation rewards started a bit later on July 4th. The DAO rewards are introduced the latest in September 2019.

Around 60k HIVE equivalent is distributed daily now, not including the DAO/DHF. With those included depending on the amount of project funded this number is around 65k to 70k HIVE daily.

In summary the numbers are approximately like this:

  • 16M HIVE witness rewards
  • 23M HIVE curation rewards
  • 58M HIVE author rewards
  • 1.45M DAO/DHF rewards

A total of 98M HIVE was distributed from the blockchain. Round it up to 100 ๐Ÿ˜Š.

Note here on the HBD to HIVE conversions and that the numbers are approximate and not totally accurate.

At the current price of 27 cents for HIVE this is a total of 27M USD rewarded to HIVE users from all of its categories. If/when the price hits 1$ this will be a 100M ๐Ÿ˜Š.

p.s when the staking rewards are included this number is bigger than the above.

All the best @dalz
