This is being led by some of the media publishers who 100% don't understand SEO and how much revenue that Google/Facebook brings to them via organic search, let alone paid ads.

While it doesn't matter from a user's perspective because we will just search somewhere else, the media publishers who are leading this charge are the ones that it going to royally fuck.

Their traffic is going to more than half overnight and conversions are going to be much harder to get.

The lesson here: Don't let boomers who don't understand tech, lobby and legislate on tech.
