Morning guys,

In yesterday's LMT, @taskmaster4450le asked if there is a place to find keywords that we should target.

Let me share my process around how to do simple keyword research and help optimise your content for SEO.

How to do simple keyword research

So let's use your latest post as an example: How Long Do We Keep Hearing About Competition For Tesla?

1. Come up with a post idea: Obviously you've come up with the idea to write a post talking about competition for tesla, so that idea becomes your starting point.

Now you have an idea as your starting point, you can start to optimise.

2. Find your primary keyword: In terms of SEO, these are words and phrases that searchers enter into search engines.

You want to have a keyword/search query in mind every time you optimise a post for SEO.

The easiest, free keyword research tool is called Google Keyword Planner

While this is technically a tool to get you to pay for search ads, it shows search volume ranges so works for us.

I typed in 'tesla competition' and got the following:

So there's 10K-100K average searches globally for the keyword 'tesla competition'.

Other variations that pique my interest here is the 'tesla competitors 2020' keyword because you could possibly combine 2 high volume searches in the one post headline.

3. Optimise your keyword Next we want to go to Google, type in our keyword and see what currently works for competitors and what Google suggests.

I just searched our high volume keyword in Google and got:

You can see that both the P0 (featured snippet) is 'teslas main competitors' and the P1 (top ranking article) is 'tesla's biggest competitors'.

This is what currently works, so you can consider basing your article on bettering this.

I also like to look at the 'People also ask' section for subheading ideas so with that list, there's a ready made post outline for you.

Final checklist for your Tesla post
  • Keyword: tesla competition. (Used through the article)
  • H1: Include the keyword.
  • H2, H3, H4: include the keyword. (Your subheading that just says 'competition' could be expanded to 'Is Tesla worried about competition?'
  • 500 words+: Google likes long form content so the longer the better.
  • Include internal links to other leofinance.io related content (Here are some of your related Tesla posts I just quickly found on Google: 1. , 2. , 3. - I'm sure you have better ones).
  • Include a relevant external link to say the Tesla official site. My rule is a 2:1 ratio of internal to external links and don't promote competitors like Publish0x.
  • In the [] brackets of any images you upload, include the tesla competition keyword. (You have the image of their supercomputer so your alt text on the image would be something like [Not many of Tesla's competition would have a supercomputer like this.]

The Google algo is meant to be smart enough to prioritise content that reads well and actually helps people, so always keep that in mind.

It seems complicated, but once you get into the groove, it's pretty common sense stuff.

Hopefully this will help you optimise your posts for SEO a little bit more.

:)
