I'm listening to the podcast right now and I arrived to the 'renting Splinterlands deck' question.

I'd like to add two things, besides what Jon said, which was great:

  1. Soon Splinterlands itself will have a renting system inside the game
  2. Another way to answer Task's question: renting cards is good for several use cases:
  • for testing purposes, if it's an expensive card, to see if practice shows it will bring a good leverage for your deck
  • if you only need a certain card for a limited period of time (like one-two days, in a tournament), and you find a suitable card on the rental market
  • if you are a very good player (or a bot) and you choose the right cards to rent and at the right price, you can constantly make more profit from rewards than you pay for renting and you basically make a profit while playing for free.
  • there is an indicator called 'collection power'. If you have a low collection power you can't play in higher leagues. Some prefer to rent powerful cards, in order to boost their collection power, because they can't afford to buy them (yet).

I've heard of all of the above being used. I don't rent cards, so I haven't used these techniques, but I do lend a good chunk of mine.
