Józef Chełmoński, Scene from January Uprising, 1885

There was no bigger sensation in the Polish art world than the recent auction of a collection of an anonymous antique dealer from Łódź at the Siebers auction house in Stuttgart. It was not disclosed how and when the collection found itself in Germany. Łódź, as the rest of Poland, was occupied by Germany during the 2nd World War and there was no information that the auctioned works actually did not come to Germany during that period. The history of collection, and the identity of its owner will certainly generate huge interest as among the auctioned works were true gems like this painting by Chełmoński, which was reflected by huge prices fetched. Hopefully more will be known soon about this collection.
