In my country we are experiencing a very important economic crisis, even many analysts say that it is even worse, in view of current economic indicators than the one we suffered in 2001, probably the most remembered and painful for all Argentines.

At that time, the very serious crisis caused the fall of President De la Rua just a few days before the Christmas holidays when he still had two years left in office; all of us who are old enough remember the photograph showing him leaving by helicopter from the terrace of the pink house. Most likely, this government will not come out in the same way, but despite all the difficulties, it will finish the four-year term required by our Constitution, the main reason that I sense is that Peronism is the one that governs and not the opposition. The Peronists or their new Kirchnerist version are much more combative with their political opponents.

This brief explanation helps me to comment on a story that came out a few days ago in the New York Times where the duality that exists at the moment with the price of cryptocurrencies is mentioned, but since at the same time they are sustained and preferred in our country where there is also a strong increase in investment projects, exchange houses, and virtual wallets.

Of course, the speculation about this particular contradiction is explained by the crisis of our currency, with year-on-year inflation that is increasingly close to three digits, nobody believes in the value of the peso and many are looking for other alternatives that preserve their savings. Such is the desperation to get rid of the pesos that are worth less every day that we do not care that cryptocurrencies are at their lowest values ​​in recent times.

Of course, the almost absolute impossibility of obtaining other fiat currencies such as the dollar, for example, which has been the most attractive for us for many years, in fact, it is speculated that we Argentines have stored under our mattresses an approximate amount of $300 billion in cash. The term "kept under the mattress" is just an allegory that indicates the lack of confidence in our banking system, so we prefer to have them in our homes (although some brave people keep them in safe deposit boxes) rather than in sight accounts in some entity. banking. We have already suffered various types of confiscation of our savings, so as my grandmother would say: “he who got burned with milk sees a cow and cries”.

In the note of the New York newspaper, several interviews were conducted with savers, and developers of applications for investment and exchange of cryptocurrencies and all agree that Argentines see bitcoin and particularly stable currencies as a lifeline to maintain the value of their savings.

Not even the high-interest rates that banks offer their customers manage to capture more money. Not to mention stocks and bonds that, in such a depressed market and with so many obstacles, sail in a sea that barely keeps them afloat.

The great difference that can be seen is that Argentines believe that cryptocurrencies are going to recover while the peso spends its last days without pain or glory, even if it were to change the denomination or resort to the worn-out mechanism of removing zeros, the problems Derived from the fiscal deficit, the scarce amount of reserves and state expenses that grow instead of falling, a new currency would end up in the same crisis in a short time.

En aquel momento la gravísima crisis provocó la caída del presidente De la Rua apenas unos días antes de las fiestas de Navidad cuando todavía le quedaban dos años de mandato; todos los que tenemos suficiente edad recordamos la fotografía mostrando su salida en helicóptero desde la terraza de la casa rosada. Los peronistas o su nueva versión kirchnerista son mucho más combativos con sus adversarios políticos.

Esta somera explicación me sirve para comentarles una noticia que salió hace algunos días en el New York Times donde se hace mención a la dualidad que existe en estos momentos con el precio de las criptomonedas, pero como al mismo tiempo se sostienen y se prefieren en nuestro país donde además hay un fuerte incremento en proyectos de inversión, casas de cambio y billeteras virtuales.

Por supuesto la especulación sobre esa particular contradicción está explicada por la crisis de nuestra moneda, con una inflación interanual que se acerca cada vez más a los tres dígitos, nadie cree en el valor del peso y muchos están buscando otras alternativas que preserven sus ahorros. Tal es la desesperación por desprenderse de los pesos que día a día valen menos que no nos importa que las criptomonedas se encuentren en sus valores más bajos de los últimos tiempos.

Por supuesto que también influye la casi absoluta imposibilidad de hacerse con otras monedas fiat como el dólar por ejemplo que es la más simpática para nosotros desde hace muchísimos años, de hecho, se especula que los argentinos tenemos guardados bajo nuestros colchones una suma aproximada a los 300.000 millones de dólares en efectivo. El término “guardado bajo el colchón” es solo una alegoría que indica la nula confianza en nuestro sistema bancario por lo que preferimos tenerlos en nuestras casas (aunque algunos valientes los mantienen en cajas de seguridad) antes que en cuentas a la vista en alguna entidad bancaria. Ya hemos sufrido diversos tipos de confiscación de nuestros ahorros por lo que como diría mi abuela: “el que se quemó con leche ve una vaca y llora”.

En la nota del diario neoyorquino se realizaron varias entrevistas a ahorristas, a desarrolladores de aplicaciones para inversión e intercambio de criptodivisas y todos coinciden en que los argentinos ven al bitcoin y particularmente a las monedas estables como una tabla de salvación para mantener el valor de sus ahorros.

Ni siquiera las altas tasas de interés que los bancos ofrecen a sus clientes logran captar más dinero. Ni hablar de acciones y bonos que en un mercado tan deprimido y con tantas trabas navegan en un mar que apenas las mantiene a flote.

La gran diferencia que se logra visualizar es que los argentinos creen que las criptomonedas se van a recuperar mientras que el peso transcurre sin pena ni gloria sus últimos días, inclusive si fuera a cambiar la denominación o recurrir al gastado mecanismo de quitarle ceros, los problemas derivados del déficit fiscal, la escasa cantidad de reservas y los gastos del estado que en vez de bajar crecen, una nueva moneda acabaría en la misma crisis en poco tiempo.
