Rarity is a game I already wrote about and this new release is not a sequel, but a separate game based on the same idea. The first title was launched by Andre Cronje, founder of Yearn Finance and many other DeFi "blue chips", but there hasn't been much development ever since the game was released.

A completely new team acquired the original domain and put a few new twists on top of the already existing concept.

What Is Rarity 2?

Rarity is a play-to-earn RPG game where players complete tasks and level up their adventurers to claim rewards in the form of the RG token. In the first iteration of the game leveling up your character would reward you with some gold but in Rarity 2, the Gold ($RG) has a much more constrained supply. In fact, the community can vote to change how much gold can be claimed at each level.

In the first version of the game, Gold was easy to farm because anyone could claim it while Rarity 2 introduced an innovation where only named characters can claim it and where names have to be purchased. What this means is that you need to give your adventurer a name in order to receive rewards and this service costs 75 $RGV tokens which are about $10 at current prices.

As you can see, my Vitalik wizard is ready for the reawrds.

Gameplay

The gameplay is unchanged with a few new additions that were inspired by Scarcity Game that launched on Polygon.

Tavern is where you can recruit adventurers. Minting them is completely free but if they don't get a name you won't get any rewards when they level up.

You can complete quests here once your Adventurers are strong enough.

Crafting requires crafting materials that your adventurers will collect when they get back from their adventures. Once sent out, they will complete the "adventure" in 24 hours, gain some experience, and await your further instructions.

The quest page is just a shorter version of the tavern since it only displays available quests and Upkeep will give you a detailed overview of all of your adventurers in one place.

Gold wrapping and trading is still a bit unclear so maybe some future updates will give me a better understanding of this feature. For now, it seems like a simple wrapper to make the Gold tradable.

Overall Impression

Even though it looks different and has a governance token, Rarity 2 doesn't offer many new features if you are coming from the original game. The gameplay method is still the same - send your adventurers on an adventure or quest, wait 24 hours, repeat.

Once you acquire some gold and in-game items the RPG elements are insanely detailed but for now the gameplay aspect is lacking.

Should You Mint Some Characters?

The team behind this project seems determined to improve the original concept but that may take some time. For now, there is a lot of documentation available if you are interested in the general idea behind this game and where it may be going in the future. Considering that there wasn't much interest for yesterday's launch it won't probably attract many people meaning that the in-game rewards maybe won't be worth the price you need to pay to name your character.

But, there is one more twist to this tale. I was invited to the beta testing Telegram Group and as things stand, old Rarity players will get a chance to earn some free tokens with the NFTs from the original game. If you minted and leveled some up when I wrote about it, get ready for some free money starting tomorrow.

Of course, all of this won't mean much if the game doesn't catch wind and liquidity starts coming in. For now, there is only $2,5K of liquidity sitting on Spooky Swap and $6K trading volume in the past 24 hours.

Conclusion

Rarity is an interesting RPG concept that could have a very bright future if development goes in the right direction. Considering that the launch party is tomorrow and old Rarity players may start coming in for the rewards we could see some buzz around Rarity 2 but if you are new to this game it would probably be best to wait it out for a few more days before making the decision.

$10 or $20 is not too much to pay for a character name but if the token loses all of its value after distribution starts it simply won't be worth it.
