There are various ways but yes both internal and external motivation are both important. I think the FIRE movement for retiring early is external motivation. By doing so, you are free to pursue internal motivation afterwards. If you choose to follow the internal motivation first, then you may face external motivation hardships.

So I don't know which one is required more and it will probably change based on the person's goal.
