I think the banks are very interested. Recently in the past week, I saw a youtube video where some discussed why JP Morgan Chase was thinking of creating it's own stablecoin. According to that video there are some benefits to doing so: 1) harder to hack, 2) faster transactions, and 3) gives more interest compared to existing bank accounts.
