When money is the sole motivation it kills the prospects of passion and goals, it makes it difficult to be see value Irrespective of how stunted growth can be. I believe we should be driven by passion because when a person gets rewarded for being passionate, it's totally fulfilling. It's a broad topic like you said. But i try as much as possible to balance what motivates me.
