How to keep yourself safe from crypto-scams

And here we are .. Monday, the last week of a controversial (to say the least) year. 2020.

With the recent BTC price rising to the moon so quickly, with Elon Musk's tweet and with so many online articles, there has been even more interest in the crypto world. More than ever.

All these mean that the year ahead of us, will bring explosive growth to many fields in the blockchain tech - and of course decentralized (or crypto-rewarding) social media cannot be left behind. Already, there is a tremendous increase and I believe that our eyes will be witnessing lots of new things in the very near future.

Wherever there is $$, there you will also find scam. Lots of it! People dream of being rich, smart and quickly and they will never stop trying. But they usually don't take the time to make research, they dont want to take the stairs - but are looking for a quick elevator to take them to the top!

So get ready to see lots of new scams that will try to fool you, or your relatives/friends!

Get ready to defend yourself and to protect other people.

The idea for this article came to me today ... There is so much I want to write about that I really could not make up my mind.

But then I saw a new message on my discord...

Oh my! Can I really be so lucky on a Monday morning? What did I do to deserve this luck? Just by registering to a new exchange I can simply draw 83000 EUR??!!?!?!?

Amazing :)

So, let's spot the mistakes and see what we can check out every time we see/spot such a great opportunity!

1. Unknown sender

A user that I do not know sent me something

Do I trust them? No, I don't know them. Also, if I click on them, I see that they are very new on Discord

2. Who is this user?

What about the name?

It has a very distinct typo. Whoever made it was too busy to cross check and swapped accidentally the ae in Michael >> Micheal

Not to mention that nobody enters Discord with their real name, most of the users use a username :)

3. Website

Check out their website

Their website seems that they just took in a template and quickly assembled 2 pages.

They do not have any contact info, other than a free email and a domain email, no social media, nothing

No company info, no legal address .. they claim to have a history that goes way back but ..

4. Cast a Who is spell :)

A search about their domain reveals that...

https://who.is/whois/coinschangers.com

The domain is so fresh, it was bought just a few days ago!

And their offices? A P.O. Box, somewhere in Panama!

5. Google Search them!

A search for their name shows no results for them

They should have some social media, publications, articles etc but they have zero!

6. Be suspicious

I would never trust someone that states to deliver an amount of money of money, If I need to deposit any amount of $, if I need to provide any personal information or banking information or any passwords. I would never register to a site that I don't trust!

If something is sent to you by a friend, make sure you check it with your friend before joining! Often, accounts are being compromised and send phishing message to all the new contacts, some people will trust what is being shared by a friend and will not research further.

You can never bee too cautious!

How to report a spam/phishing message on Discord

Go to the message, click on the three dots and then copy the message id (which you will provide to the below form with all the necessary information)

You don't always have to make all this analysis or research, always be cautious and stay safe!
