Forget Online Shopping. Walmart Wants You to Shop in VR!
hey frens, I hope you're doing well. I had the most restless sleep ever last night so I'm struggling today. Normally the first thing I do when I wake up is drink some coffee and start writing. Not today. I woke up, drank coffee, and took an accidental nap. Then woke up confused and drank more coffee. Then I came across something that kinda blew my mind.
Walmart Going Metaverse
Apparently in December, just a few weeks ago, Walmart filed some patents that suggest that they are gearing up for the metaverse. That being said, these are just patent applications and they could be interpreted in a lot of ways. The most notable of the patents mentions a digital currency or a digital coin as well as NFTs. Wen Walmart Coin? They seem to be planning on creating virtual goods like home decor, electronics, and toys. All for you house in the virtual world of course. Might as well sell virtual food too. They of course have plans to trademark their logo in VR and AR as well. There's even mention of them doing physical fitness training in VR. Walmart is really trying to do it all.
Walmart is not new to the world of blockchain, so them creating their own tokens and NFTs is to be expected. They've been using blockchain for a couple years to help with supply chain management. I guess the next step is even further eliminating supply chain issues by just selling virtual goods instead of physical goods. Who needs real furniture when you can just get virtual furniture for your metaverse house? They aren't gunna run out of wood to make furniture in the metaverse. Big brains only over here. Let's take a look at what the Walmart VR shopping experience might look like... Spoiler: it's just fucking weird. Like... Really weird.

So instead of going to the Walmart app on your phone, adding items to your cart, and checking out... Walmart thinks people would rather strap on their VR headset, stroll down to the local Walmart in the metaverse, and walk the aisles... Fumbling around with virtual wine bottles and milk. It's like a fever dream. Can you imagine having this virtual "personal shopper" floating around in your peripheral vision suggesting things to buy? It sounds like an actual nightmare. Sure the video looks cool. But that's really it. At least if you're in VR I guess you don't have to deal with the sight of the lovely "people of walmart" like this beautiful couple.
All jokes aside, Walmart doing NFTs, crypto, and now metaverse shit is great for mass adoption. When Walmart does it, literally everyone has access. It's a little bit different than a niche retailer like Nike selling shoes that you can wear in the metaverse. Imagine when Amazon adds NFTs to their platform. Millions of people shop at Walmart and Amazon every single day that have never even heard of crypto. This is the kind of thing that can really reach the masses and I believe both of these giant companies know that people are dumb and it needs to be simple. We're VERY early.
