It may come as a complete shock to some but... Ubisoft's Quartz NFTs are not doing too hot on the secondary market. These NFTs are called "Digits" and are currently for use in the game Ghost Recon: Breakpoint. They were given away free to players that set up a Quartz account and completed a few criteria. This platform was launched in Beta about a month ago and was not very well received by players.

Ubisoft Quartz

Ubisoft Quartz is just NFT snake oil is a fantastic article that came out a few days after the initial launch. It breaks down what the terms of use of these NFTs are and how they work. The announcement of the platform was not well received by players in the slightest. It was met with over 30k dislikes and about 1000 likes. It was also met with great criticism from gamers, streamers, and content creators. Is it really that shocking when you try cramming NFTs into a game that exists and operates perfectly as it is without NFTs? There already exists a market for in game items such as skins, so why do we need to try to force NFTs into the mix, especially when these particular NFTs are kinda pointless? The obvious answer is money. Ubisoft wants to milk this game and NFTs for all it can. They make that very clear in the terms of use for Digits.

I'd say that the only good thing about the Digits NFTs is that they are on the Tezos blockchain. At least they aren't on Ethereum or some other chain that requires physical mining. There's mention of the possibility to use Digits across different chains but it's highly unlikely that this will ever be the case. These are purely cosmetic and are made for use within specific games. They really botched the whole idea of true ownership here, making them "only for use in game or in a wallet". Basically, if the game or Ubisoft Quartz dies, the owner really doesn't have the right to that Digit even though it's an NFT on Tezos. Ubisoft also mentions they will be taking fees from every single transaction without ever clearly stating what the fee is. Seems kinda sketchy but ok. These NFTs are only allowed on Rarible or Objkt which is fucked but you know... Anyway - I'll let you read and draw your own conclusion from that. I wanted to see what these secondary market sales are looking like after one month. Spoiler: not good.

As for Rarible - there's a whopping 22 sales within the collection. Damn that's HOT! I'm sure they were expecting this number to be about 10-20x this amount. They're probably sitting in their office and wondering where all this magic internet money is supposed to be coming in. That's a grand total around 400 XTZ valued at $2000.

Looking at Objkt, it's even worse. 12 sales total! Roughly 147 XTZ valued around $750. That's just.... sad.

These Digits are literally the worst version of what could have been done with NFTs in Ubisoft's games. Yes, this is the first iteration, but the terms of use probably won't change. This is a watered down useless version of what NFTs could do for gaming. I'll say it again. Gaming doesn't need NFTs just like NFTs don't need gaming. They can work very well together, but there doesn't need to be NFTs in every single game.

Thanks for reading! Much love.
