The absolute maximum supply of a digital asset.
This is best coupled with blockchain which can code in the maximum number of coins or tokens that are available. The number of units of the particular cryptocurrency is thus set.
Here we see scarcity created since there are only so much of a cryptocurrency available. The only way to change this is to create a new currency via a fork.
Bitcoin is the most well known example with its hard cap of 21 million.
