Beating Crypto Returns: What is Even Better than Blogging on Hive?

You might be wondering what I have been smoking, posting to Leo about an investment strategy that beats blogging on Hive but do stick with me, I think you will like it.

I was chatting with @themarkymark - something I think everyone should take the opportunity to do by the way - and we were talking about my approach to Hive going forward.

While I am going to stick to my daily posting, my other projects are going to be on hold outside of progressing them as content for tutorials etc. There is just no way that I can see that people will want to buy what I am selling. People on Hive just don't spend money in ways that I can build a profitable project.

Marky is, as you might imagine, very bullish on Hive so he was a little doubtful that I was making the right move. I explained that I still, even while neglecting that whole business, make more rewards from one affiliate merchant with very old blog articles than I do currently on Hive.

Overnight I thought I should check if that was still the case.

Here are the receipts

In all my time (since August 2017) on Steem/Hive I have earned 6,336.09 HP (4,953.07 HP author, 1,383.03 HP curation).

Since October 2018, one of my best affiliate programs has paid me $149,175 USD (with $5,775 still to come because their items are "Not Yet Shipped").

For the first time ever, my 30-day $HIVE rewards will exceed my AWeber email service affiliate payments ($507.1 versus $480.84), but keep in mind this payment is after a dramatic drop in my referrals to AWeber after the Google updates during the holidays.

In the same timeframe, my Prusa 3D printer amount will be $962.26 if none of the orders are canceled, $1,180.18 from my share of membership site proceeds, and I will get $593.95 from Thunder Laser.

A strange thing I only just realized is the majority of my commissions lately are NOT for 3D printers! I need to change my linking strategy ...

Should we draw any conclusions from that?

Yes, perhaps, but not in the way you might be thinking.

It's true that even one of the smaller per-transaction commissions I have shown is often more than my daily $HIVE rewards. For example, if someone buys some 3D printer filament and I earn $22.31 and then someone else does the same and that makes me $22.53 that is already a higher return on the work I did than I can expect from blogging here, but that is just day 1 - there is no 7 day cut-off from my affiliate programs or my own products.

But what if $HIVE 10x?

Affiliate income will still be double what I have made on Hive.

6,336.09 HP at $10 is still "only" $63,360, less than half of what my best program has made in less time ($149,175). $HIVE would need to be valued at $24 just to beat that one program, without factoring in the others.

Could $HIVE reach $25? Despite our ATH never being close to that, it's not beyond the realms of possibility longer term, considering our main competition (in my current view) is Rally and DeSo which have both been at that level or more, plus I actually think our blockchain is competitive with utility platforms such as ETH.

Why Not Both?

Here is the fun thing, and my real answer.

My day-job income goes into our household bank account and gets spent on the mortgage, car payments, groceries, etc, and my side gig income goes into our business bank account (not having premises or staff, the outgoings from there merely pays for equipment, software licenses, and such). Right now I think the APY is under 1%!

Nothing provides a better return than the compounding effect of a cash flow net positive business.

What I plan to do is go back to working on my affiliate business and my own products, and after expenses, investing in my business put remaining earnings into crypto investment.

No bank can provide as big an upside as the potential that a diversified crypto portfolio offers, and yes that includes compounding my Hive stake.

Provided I don't eat into the account balance then I still have a decent rainy day buffer.

Those daily Hive blog posts? They can help my side gigs grow.

How is something I will cover in another article, follow the Authority Bloggers community to see my strategy unfold.
