To make HIVE work, you have 2 types of servers:
  • The Witness server that writes the block with the transactions in the blockchain and is rewarded for doing it. There are 20 permanents (top 20) + 1 random taken among the other witnesses for each round.

  • The node server which serve the data of the blockchain to dApp and require an higher & expensive model of server. It's the backbone of the HIVE architecture and its operator doesn't receive any reward.

The core developers of HIVE

If HIVE is alive today it's because HIVE has very active core developers who since our separation from STEEM have not stopped optimizing the blockchain, adding new features, preparing others for the next hardfork (expiration of votes for witnesses, recurring payment...) etc...

I now suggest that you do some research to find out who runs a node and who contributes to the development of HIVE to see if there are any of these witnesses. You can start by the git repository of HIVE with it's 97 members : https://gitlab.syncad.com/hive/hive/-/project_members ๐Ÿ˜‰

Bonus: to see the activity on the HIVE development it's here: https://gitlab.syncad.com/hive/hive/-/graphs/master/charts

We are now 99 witnesses on HIVE and half of us don't get a return on our investment to run one. Everyone has their own motivations (for me it's my geek side and for the fun of testing developments on HIVE, but also to better understand how it works).

I agree that not everything is perfect, but when I sometimes look at what STEEM has become (including its witnesses), I am more than happy to have chosen HIVE ๐Ÿ‘

By the way, thanks for your posts on the witnesses who lack interest among a large part of the Hivians.
