Is Twitter that bad at $8/month?

Everybody is fuming about having to pay $8/month to own a verified Twitter account, even bot operators are furious, scammers, impersonators and people who have never been verified on Twitter before. It’s interesting to see.

Do I care about being verified? Before now, I didn’t, I’m more or less a rando on Twitter, I could care less about having to go through some ridiculous process to get a verified check mark. It’s not like I get any interactions anyway. But all that may change now.

One thing is clear, Twitter is not the web 3 application that most people are expecting it to be, Elon Musk has made this clear as day and expecting something different based on former mode operations is a fools errand. If many thought like this there wouldn’t be so much outburst.

Is the paywall requirement a mistake? I highly doubt that, a de facto “town square” that requires a pay wall,…..first question, is Twitter successful as a “de factor” town square? In my opinion, yeah, and being that, it admits a lot of different types of accounts both legitimate and illegitimate.

If it requires a paywall to separate a legitimate account from an illegitimate one within the context of a de factor town square platform, scratch that, if it’ll take a paywall to authenticate an account on the de facto town square via a blue check, then so be it.

So will I pay $8/month to get a verified check? No I would not because Twitter is not my main social media and I could care less, I’m mostly on Twitter to scrape information, for people like us, a blue check makes no difference, my major audience is on Hive where I have most social interaction.

Funny that Elon tweeted that meme above, that people will pay 8 bucks for a cup of Starbucks tea that will last max 30mins and be happy but be sad about paying 8 bucks for 30 days of blue check on Twitter. It’ll be interesting to see that most people getting furious will be the ones to pay first.

Are you in for it?
