The Future Of Splinterlands Might Be Brighter Than You Think

In the 19th century, fictional worlds reached the masses through novels. Then cinema and television began to appeal to the imagination of the audience. In the 21st century, video games have become the main medium of imagination.

Fictional universes have become a major source of income in the last decades. According to Wikipedia, Pokemon ranks first among media franchises with a total gross of $110 billion. Hello Kitty, Mickey Mouse & Friends, Winnie The Pooh, Star Wars, and Mario follow Pokemon, respectively.

One of the things that caught my attention in the list of media franchises is that the biggest revenue is mostly from merchandise sales. Another feature of large media franchises is that they withstand time. All franchises in the top five have emerged before the year 2000. There are many franchises from the 20th century throughout the list.

There are franchises on the list that have grown out of media such as cartoons, movies, video games, and books. Since they are still very new, blockchain-based franchise candidates are not on the list. However, we can easily predict that they will quickly climb to the top of the list over time. And the Pokemon-inspired Splinterlands is one of the candidates for a major media franchise.

Blockchain-based fictional universes have obvious advantages over others. It turns its fan base from being a consumer to community members. Thanks to the tokens and NFTs owned, community members become partners in the fictional universe in a sense. As the popularity of the fictional universe increases, the followers of the fictional universe also get a share of growth and development.

The ownership structure of Web3 that distinguishes it from previous media can enable future media franchises to generate much larger revenues. Because in addition to traditional income sources, income from digital products will also come into play. Today I am walking around the physical world in Star Wars t-shirts. If it gets popular enough, I may well wear Splinterlands-themed t-shirts in the future. Also, my digital avatar can wear a Splinterlands-themed digital outfit. Moreover, I may own the plots of the first Splinterlands movie to be shown in theaters.

It is clear that Web3 has laid the groundwork for the development of fictional universes. So, can Splinterlands stand out from the intense competition among blockchain-based games?

Splinterlands is second among web3 games in terms of player count, played by 272,000 people last week. When evaluated in terms of financial criteria, we see that Splinterlands is far behind Ethereuım-based games such as Axie Infinity and Illuvium. On the other hand, when we consider Splinterlands' non-SPS tokens and NFT collections, the true size of the ecosystem becomes apparent.

Splinterlands' native coin, SPS, had a price of $0.95 on November 10, 2021. It is trading at $0.05 at the time of writing this article. This dramatic depreciation of SPS price was due to the high emissions as well as the general state of the crypto market. Private sales of 200 million units, one of the two main sources of high emissions, took 10 months. According to my calculation, 10 months have passed recently. The 400 million airdrops will expire after 35 days.

When evaluated on the basis of Bitcoin, the SPS price has been horizontal since February.

I think that with the end of the airdrop, an upward movement in prices will begin. Upward price action may also begin before the end of the airdrop.
