One of the perks of being a freelancer is the fact that we discover more things way out of our field, things you can take crash courses on and with time, become a professional. I took an affiliate marketing course sometime last year because it was all anybody could talk about that time. Learning this pushed me into studying social media marketing, little graphic designing and copy writing. These skills were necessary to any good marketer and just before I had money to pay individual professionals to cover all bases, I needed to know them for myself. When running ads, it is important to structure your content and headlines in a way that would pull in your target audience at first glance but that ad has to reach them first right? This is where keywords come in.

The internet is full of people looking to buy one thing or as we like to call them, potential buyers. They go on their keyboards and type in words relating to whatever they want to buy. Say you’re in the market to buy a pair of nike shoes. You search “nike shoes” or “white sneakers”, depending on what ever color you’re looking to buy then google brings up a definition as well as thousand of websites selling or listing white sneakers. This is how keywords work; marketers use words that they think potential buyers would search for when looking for what they sell and so they use those words in their ads so it comes up every time someone uses those keywords.

Using keywords are good but for any start up marketer, the use of long tail keywords. These types of keywords have relatively low search but lesser competition. To paint the picture clear, imaging you started your own clothing store and you’re trying to get more traffic to your store and you use the keyword “t-shirt” when running your ad. There about 4 billion results online. In simple terms, you are competing with about 4 billion sites on google meaning you’re going up against the likes of Amazon. *Screenshot from google

Long tail keywords help to narrow down the search and is more specific. Using “blue American fitted t-shirt” reduces the number to about 759 million and using multiple long tail keywords narrows the search down to you or your business.

Research shows people don’t even use single keywords again. Most of the people who use youtube use keywords in their videos and don’t even know it, they call them tags. These tags help their videos reach anybody searching for anything pertaining to that particular content.

The job of a keyword researcher is to help businesses find these words when running ads on google and/or any social media platform they choose. We do the research for businesses and come up with keywords they can use in running their ads but its not as simple as it sounds. One part of the job involves searching for keywords, running those keywords to see the number of searches they have, use that information to find related keywords. Most people use special tools created for that particular purpose like keywordtool.io or the google ad keyword research tool. Our job doesn’t involve writing the ads for the business. This actually requires less skill and more of your ability to research. If you ever want to be a keyword researcher as a side hustle, take crash courses on google and youtube or ask questions here, I’ll answer them and if you’re looking for a keyword researcher, you also know where to find me.
